How Your Support Helps: A Family’s Story of Resilience and Hope

25th July 2025

At Redcar Area Foodbank, every donation and act of kindness makes a real difference. Behind every food parcel is a story of strength, compassion, and community – like the one we’d like to share with you today.

Recently, a local couple arrived at the foodbank unexpectedly, seeking support after their son and two teenage grandchildren had moved in with them. The arrangement was temporary, but necessary. Their daughter-in-law had entered a rehabilitation clinic to receive treatment for substance misuse, and while their son is also in recovery, he didn’t feel ready to manage alone with the children.

Without hesitation, the grandparents stepped in to provide a safe and stable home for their family – but the sudden increase in household size put significant pressure on their already tight finances, particularly amid rising food and energy costs.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and partners, we were able to provide:

  • An emergency food parcel, offering immediate relief from food insecurity.

  • A referral to Citizens Advice, where they received:

    • Guidance on their rights as temporary guardians.

    • Information on financial and family support services.

  • Energy vouchers to help offset the increased cost of utilities due to a larger household.

  • A follow-up appointment to check in on their wellbeing and offer continued support.

This support not only helped the family through a difficult moment, but also gave them hope and reassurance for the future. Immediate hunger was eased, emotional stress was reduced, and the couple was connected with long-term resources to help them manage the road ahead.

This is just one example of how your support changes lives. Whether you donate food, funds, or time – you’re part of a network helping families stay strong through crisis.
